On May 9th, 2014, AirAsia Malaysia was officially relocated its operation from Low Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT) to Kuala Lumpur International Airport 2 (KLIA2).
Lucky me, I was also flying with the airline on the same day to Jakarta, Indonesia for a running event there. Tons of communications about the new airport including how to get around the area have been shared thru social medium like Facebook and email blasts to passengers.
Getting To KLIA2
Getting to KLIA2 is easy. No much change on the public transportation from KL Sentral located in the main city. Public transport fee from KL Sentral is still RM8 - RM10 which takes about 50 minutes - 1 hours journey depends on traffic. There is KLIA Express services too. Fee is standard at RM35 one way which operates until 12.30am.
I was impressed with the public bus parking facility. Upon entering the public bus area for passengers drop-off, there was an automatic parking bay indication on the gate screens.
Passengers will need to walk thru the new airport mall where you could find tons of retail shops and restaurants towards the main airport terminal.

Security Check Point
There will be 2 security check points entering the area. After entering the international departure gate, you will find the immigration passport checking zone. For Malaysian, you may use the auto-gate for faster clearance. After securing your Passport ID by manual counter or automatic gate, you may want to double check your departure gate zone. Every zone will have its own security check points.
As for my day 1 in KLIA2, the security check point was longer and did take sometime to pass thru. Estimated myself there more than 15 minutes until I cleared the security check.
Be Prepared
- Reach at least 3 hours early if this is your first time here
- Ask the airport officials for directions if you are not sure (Tons of service enquiry personnels in the area, just look at their uniform)

About KLIA2
Located just two kilometers from the main KLIA Terminal, KLIA2 is being constructed to replace the temporary Low-Cost Carrier Terminal (LCCT), which was constructed in 2006. This modern airport is also set to open by April 2013 and according to owners, Malaysia Airport Holdings Berhad (MAHB), the total cost to build the KLIA2 is estimated at RM4.0 Billion which is currently 52% completed.
When completed, KLIA2 will be the largest Low Cost Carrier Terminal in the region of Southeast Asia with a total area of 242,000 square meters. There will be a total of 68 aircraft parking bay with departure gates for each parking bay while the new budget terminal will cater to around 30 million passengers. There will also be a third runaway which is located 1.5 km from the second runaway.
KLIA2 will feature a multi-modal transportation hub for buses, taxis, and Express Rail Link (ERL) train to provide connectivity for passengers and also for the public. There is also talk of a possible KTM Train link nearby making it easy to get here. Other facilities here include a semi-automated baggage handling system, support zones, cargo and inflight complexes, a 6,000-vehicle parking complex, two to three hotels and AirAsia's future headquarters.
When the new terminal is completed, it will be equipped with facilities to cater to passenger comfort, including a public shopping mall and a fully automated baggage handling system. Among the main hotels that will be built here is the Tune Hotel which will serve as one of the main budget hotels here. Another possibility is that Pan Pacific will also open a hotel here.
One of the highlights here is the much talked about 300 meter long pedestrian skybridge in an airport. The skybridge will connect the international pier and the domestic pier. This modern skybridge will be the longest in Asia and third longest in the world where passengers will have the experience of 'walking over' the aircraft compared to KLIA where travelers take the aerotrain on ground level.
There will be 225 Commercial Lots at KLIA2. From the 225 lots, 118 lots will be for Retail, 81 lots Food and Beverage and 26 lots for Services.
