Running: Colourcoil Borneo TMBT Ultra Trail Marathon 2015 (Sabah)

Last June 2014, I was excited with the pre-launched registrations for the Borneo 50k/100k Ultra Trail Marathon, scheduled on 29th August 2015. Recommended by my younger brother +Shafwan Wahab who have past experience at this event, I reserved my slot with the early bird price at RM100.00 for the 25K category. Registration was available online and manual bank-in to the event organisor.

The Borneo Ultra Trail Marathon is a different event from the traditional TMBT Ultra Trail Marathon which serves as a qualifying race for the North Face Ultra Du Mont Blanc.

However, the organisor decided to 'merge' The Borneo Ultra Trail Marathon 2015 and start together with the TMBT 2015 on the 29th August 2015 at the same venue and cover the same race course
and route for the 25k, 50k and 100k. The 25k will finish at Kg.Kiau Toburi or the WS4 check point for TMBT 2014.

Tons of email updates from the organisor such as race route, safety procedures, mandatory kit requirement and other were sent to participants prior to race day. Also the 25KM distance was changed to 28KM instead due to the recent earthquake at the race venue.

Race Pack Collection
The race pack collection was held 1-day before race day at Magellan Sutera Harbour Resort in Kota Kinabalu. During the REPC, participants will need to go through the mandatory kit checking to allow collection of race tee, bib and timing chip.  Met tons of running friends especially those who are hardcore trail runners. There were members from Sabah Trail Seekers, KKNER, Trail Blazers, Sky Runners and many more.

There was information notice board about the race for reference. There was also an official TMBT merchandise sale counter with pricing from RM70.

Race Day
Made my way over to Sutera Harbour at 6.00 am on race day as I have already paid for transportation facility with the organisor. Made additional payment at RM100 (Return trip) earlier during the registration period. Saw some familiar faces while taking the transport like KK runner Siong and KL runner As Bha with friends. Reached the start venue 30 minutes before flag off time which was at 9.00 am for the 25 category (Actual 28KM distance).

Transport Service
Participants were required to check-in with the organisor before flag off at the start area. Bumped onto one of my KL Sabahan running friend Benazir who signed up as a volunteer for this event. Regrouped with Ben, Khairul, Akbal, Masrul and Shalena before flag off.

The race route was definitely tough. Participants would need to train hard on their stamina and also mental for this kind of race. With weather that was getting warm as the race got into afternoon, I was glad that I have my running friends beside me for morale support to reach each checkpoints.

Once reached the designated checkpoint, the marshals will tag our timing chip before we continue to the next checkpoint. Each check points had sufficient mineral water supplies. Participants were allowed to take a quick break but need to continue the race before end of the CP cut-of-time (COT). Spotted JLO (KKNER) supporting the event as a freelance photographer just before entering the trail route towards CP2.

And then, there was heavy rain. I was grateful with the weather change as the burning heat was a huge challenge for me.

After CP3 which was the last water station for the 25KM category, it was a long up hill until the finishing line. To be honest, I were just walking with some light jog as I was getting minor muscle cramp due to the hot turned cold weather with added rain pour.

I successfully completed the 28KM trail race within the COT at 5:42 pm. There were KKNER support team Jason and Donna at the finishing line too. Collected my finisher medal at the finishing tent and the finisher tee about 500 metres away at the event area.

Lovely localised unique finisher medal. Excellent race and finisher tee design by 2nd Skins. The Adidas BUTM version was cool too with minimal print.

Sufficient mineral water supplies at water station / checkpoint. Wish there was ice cubes supplies to beat the hot weather. Clear race path marker and signage during the day. Friendly race marshals and volunteers from REPC to race event day.

The finisher tee could be much better if the completion distance print was added.

Thank you to my running friends who encouraged and supported me to finish this race.

Summary: A very well managed race event by organisor, sponsors and partners. I will definitely take part again in future races.

Event Recommendation: ★★★★★ (5/5)
